NBA All Star Game 2018: REVIEW

The night of the stars had finally arrived and it surely came at a good time with such an unbelievable result that has surely changed the way we can look at the All Star Game. The NBA All Star Game 2018 was surely a fantastic game and watching it felt truly remarkable.

The format of the All Star had changed, as you should know and the changes to the game has worked fantastically as it brought a whole new look and vibe to the All Star Game.

Take a look at what transpired in the game.

THE COMPETITIVE INTENSITY

hi-res-0ccc13c59bf7c73f41db20da72f50daf_crop_exact.jpg

In recent years, the All Star Game has always lacked the one the thing that makes a basketball game; Competition. And it’s because of this that the format of the game had to be changed and believe it when I say that the format of having two captains drafting a team really brought competition to the game. Although they were playing for charity, just something about the game made it look as if the teams were playing for a championship or perhaps pride. Whatever it was, the game was surely fantastic to watch. For once, the NBA All Star Game looked like an actual game.

“E-FENSE” BECAME DEFENSE

1519010888_nba-all-star-game-2018-live-updates-highlights-and-more-from-team-lebron-vs-team-steph.jpg

Last year’s All Star Game was the final year of seeing the terrible defense known as “e-fense” a form of defense without the actual defense which had many fans and pundits criticizing the All Star Game. But thanks to the changes of the game, we finally got a game with actual defense. For once there were no easy baskets and boring overused offensive moves which had many question the liability of having an All Star Game. This year’s game had highlighted many of the All Star’s defensive capabilities and one would swear that what they displayed was just a preview of what’s to happen come Playoff time.

THE RISING STARS BECAME ALL STARS

D4RU4R7K7NBGNE7AIWLHACLQJ4.jpg

This year saw the first All Star appearance of Joel Embiid, Victor Oladipo, Gorgan Dragic and Karl-Anthony Towns at which they were previously seen as Rising Stars but now we can look at them as All Stars. All four players had truly proved that they are All Star calibre players at which all these players proved that they are truly worthy of the title. Oladipo and Dragic may not have put up the high scoring numbers they put in their regular teams (Indiana Pacers and Miami Heat respectively) but Embiid and Towns made such an impact that many have stated that this certainly wasn’t their last appearance in the All Star Game.

AN ALL STAR CROWN FOR THE KING

nba-all-star-10.jpg

Being a lead vote getter says a lot about a player and for LeBron James to be that had shown that he’s not only the world’s favourable basketball player but also the best in the whole Association. So it’s only right for the King to display his talent even though we all know what he’s capable of and he should rather be in the MVP talks but we may not see that this year (just yet). The King, being the captain of his team, had to show the world why he is the captain by not only leading his team to victory but by also being named the All Star MVP. Although there were other players deserving of the award, LeBron just showed us why we shouldn’t sleep on him and why he really is an MVP candidate.

The NBA All Star Game ended in Team LeBron edging out Team Stephen and it ended in spectacular fashion that one would think it was a special edition of the NBA Finals. Other than that, this year’s game marked the beginning of an All Star Game era where we can surely expect nothing but the best from the selected players and teams.

Now it’s time to go back to the regular season.

NBA All Star 2018 LA: BREAKDOWN

It’s finally arrived! The week of the dazzle and the stars! No not The Finals Week, we still have a long way to that. But it’s the All Star Week, where we take a break from the Regular Season and just focus on the stardom of the All Stars.
It’s been a long road of voting and snubs and replacing and more snubs. But all of that is over as the NBA All Star Game teams have been selected by the team captains. But the Game isn’t the only big headline of the weekend as there will be other festivities that will surely entertain fans in Los Angeles and the world alike.
Here’s a breakdown of what’s to come of the NBA All Star Weekend 2018.
FRIDAY 16 FEBRUARY

Celebrity Game

kevin-hart.jpg
The All Star Weekend can’t be all about the tall athletes and the showstoppers of the Association. This is a way to kick off the weekend with the athletes who are overlooked or forgotten and those are the Celebrities. Now these aren’t your typical, Instagram/Twitter record breaking celebrities, these are the basketball-loving celebrities who have some game in them. This game may not have all the attractiveness of an average NBA game but it surely will be entertaining.
Rising Stars Challenge

usa_today_9882648.0.jpg
As a rookie, you aren’t eligible to compete in the All Star Game, simply because…you’re a rookie. But it doesn’t mean you can’t showcase your talent in front of a dazzled crowd, the Rising Stars Challenge is the perfect stage for the rookies to showcase their outmost talent. But it’s not all about the rookies, it’s also the sophomores (second year players and other young prospects of the league. And in this game, the players will be split into two teams; Team USA and Team World. Obviously, the American players will be united to play against the players from around the world. Expect this year’s game to be explosive as young talents such as Ben Simmons, Lonzo Ball, Donovan Mitchell, Lauri Markkanen and Jayson Tatum will exploit every bit of their talent.

SATURDAY 17 FEBRUARY

SKILLS CHALLENGE

60276642.jpg
Saturday is a day everybody will attend with a fresh mind and fresh body and the Skills Challenge will surely warm up the crowd and fans for what is to be a pretty fiery Saturday. The Skills Challenge is just an obstacle course for the players to waiver around, pass the ball into a net and to score. Looks simple? But it really isn’t. Players will face each other until there is one winner left and will take home the Skills Challenge trophy. Unfortunately, the Skills Challenge champion Kristaps Porzingis will be unavailable and a replacement for him will be announced. Other than that, the participants of the Skills Challenge are
Jamal Murray (Denver Nuggets)
Lauri Markkanen (Chicago Bulls)
Donovan Mitchell (Utah Jazz)
Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers)
Al Horford (Boston Celtics)
Spencer Dinwiddie (Brooklyn Nets)
Lou Williams (Los Angeles Clippers)

THREE-POINT CONTEST

klay-thompson-three-point-contest.jpg
Today’s NBA game is dictated by the form of shooting three pointers and why not have a challenge to do determine who is the best three-point shooter of the league? Okay, the answer to do that will be heavily debated but we all deserve a challenge of the best three pointers in one court. Players will be given a short time of a minute and a half to shoot 5 balls in a rack at 5 different spots around the three-point line. A normal orange basketball counts 1 point and the red, blue and white ball (known as the Money Ball) counts 2 points. The players with the most points advance to the next round until there is one winner. The defending champion of the challenge, Eric Gordon (Houston Rockets) will be defending his title against the likes of
Klay Thompson (Golden State Warriors)
Paul George (Oklahoma City Thunder)
Kyle Lowry (Toronto Raptors)
Bradley Beal (Washington Wizards)
Devin Booker (Phoenix Suns)
Tobias Harris (Los Angeles Clippers)
Wayne Ellington (Miami Heat)

SLAM DUNK CONTEST

aaron-gordon-slam-dunk-contest.jpg
The best (and only) way to close off the Saturday night with the leagues best dunkers showcasing their mean dunks to the crowd, fans and judges. The dunkers will be given three chances to perform a dunk. The judges will give a score out of 50 based on the dunk and the player with the least score has to sit down as he will watch the dunk contest until there is one winner left. Mind you, the Dunk Contest doesn’t feature the same old boring dunks we see during the regular season, the players bring out the best creative dunks for the whole world to see. This year will surely crown a new champion as the following participants
Dennis Smith Jr (Dallas Mavericks)
Larry Nance Jr (Cleveland Cavaliers)
Victor Oladipo (Indiana Pacers)
Donovan Mitchell (Utah Jazz)

SUNDAY 18 FEBRUARY

NBA ALL STAR GAME

nba-all-star-game-rule-changes.jpg
Not much has to be said about this one as it will be the main attraction of all weekend. Back in the past, the teams featured were the voted players of the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference but due to the lack of competition in those East vs West games, the NBA decided to shake things up as the two lead vote getters of the respective conferences would be voted as “Team Captains” and they would draft their team based on the pool of the selected voted players. And as you should know by now, LeBron James and Stephen Curry are the Team Captains. Team LeBron have however suffered a setback of injuries of the drafted players by NBA commissioner Adam Silver took it upon himself to select the well-deserved replacements of the injured players. But the teams are looking great and stunning and the All Star Game should surely close the All Star Weekend.

And there you have it, a very short and simple breakdown of the All Star Weekend. The event will take place in the city of Los Angeles.  Expect dunks, ridiculous threes, mindlessly beautiful plays and laughs as comedian Kevin Hart will be the team announcer. This year’s All Star should be nothing but spectacular.

Both men say their decisions took long to process and implement as they had choices of stars to select in their teams. But the captains have made their decisions and have gladly revealed their teams.
The Captains made their decision on the 25th of January and went on to reveal their team sheets on their Instagram pages (@KingJames and @stephencurry30). Because LeBron was the leading vote-getter he had the first pick.
Take a look at the teams. The names in bold are the starters.

All we have to do is await the participants of the Skills Challenge, Three-Point Contest and Dunk Contest.

Dame The DOLLA Star

For years, we’ve raveled at the debate of “who’s the best point guard in the NBA” and the answer to the question changed season after season varying on different opinions. There’s Stephen Curry, Russell Westbrook, Kyrie Irving, James Harden, Chris Paul and the list repeats itself and nobody can find the true answer. Yet people seem to forget one name in the list of best point guards in the league and if you look into it, you may end up saying he’s a top 5 point guard. Ladies and gentleman, we’re talking about Damian Lillard (Portland Trailblazers)

portland-trail-blazers-damian-lillard-meets-with-owner-paul-allen-over-team-direction.jpg
Dame Lillard has forever been a talented, skyrocketing yet overlooked and underappreciated point guard in the NBA. He pulls off the best moves, the finest plays and the most ridiculous shooting that competes with the likes of Stephen Curry and please let’s not ignore the fact that this man is immensely CLUTCH meaning the last few seconds of a game (most preferably a close game) are Dame Time. He doesn’t need the slick handles of Kyrie nor the raw power and force of Westbrook because he already has the trait of finesse in his skillset and my word Dame is truly gifted.
But why is he consistently overlooked? How is it possible to ignore a player of his stature? Why is this man not in the talks of ever being an All-Star starter? These are pressing questions indeed but they need to be asked everytime Damian Lillard is not even in the conversation of being an All-Star and this is an insult to the man’s skillset and to even himself. In all honesty though, it’s easy to ignore the guy due to the fact that he isn’t in a blockbusting team such as the Boston Celtics and the Houston Rockets. He has to settle in the Portland Trailblazers, who are not the best team but are just okay and Damian Lillard comes nowhere close to being just “okay”.

hqdefault
Dame is a player close to being a superstar and yet alone the word “star” is a big deal in the NBA because that word always come back to the big word “All-Star”. Now let’s not get it twisted, Dame is an All-Star but he hasn’t been one in the last two years and that has had some negative (also positive) effect on the man. He snubbed, left out and casted out from being an All-Star and it has never EVER made sense. Lillard has always performed to the best of abilities but it was never good enough for the voters as they had always overlooked and ignored the raw talent Damian Lillard brings to the table.
This year however, told a different story that almost went south for Dame. In the first and second returns of the All-Star votes tally, it was seen that Damian Lillard was in the running but was seen to be in a position that never made sense especially when at that time, Los Angeles Lakers first year Lonzo Ball had more votes than Dame. This was truly outrageous and absurd on the fact that Dame has been in the league for a long while, yet a rookie has more chances to be in the All-Star Game much more than a regular player who has gone to win thr Rookie of the Year award in his first season and has close off more games than we can count. Luckily, the NBA doesn’t allow rookies to take part in the All Star Game, so it’s anybody game.
But on the 24th of January the unthinkable had happen.
Damian Lillard is named a reserve of the All-Star Game!

lillard_all-star_snub.jpg
Meaning the man has returned to be an All Star.
After years of snubbing, Dame can finally smile knowing that his hard work has earned him a spot in the newly formatted All-Star Game.
But which team will he play for?
Prediction…

NBA All Star 2018: The Snubs

The NBA All-Star Game is approaching us have the team captains, starters and reserves have been announced. All that is needed to do is for the captains to draft players into their teams. After that, it’s onwards to the All-Star Game. But it’s not all smooth sails when it comes to the All-Star Game because not everybody feels satisfied with the players that are to be All-Stars and feel certain players were cheated out of the opportunity or as we all know the term, “snubbed”.
This year’s All-Stars are all truly deserving of the opportunity because they’ve been nothing but spectacular this season, so we can’t really say that they should be taken out of the All-Star Game. But we have to discuss which players were snubbed and why they deserve to on the All-Star team.
These are the Top 3 snubbed players…
1. Paul George (Oklahoma City Thunder)

usatsi_105548741.jpg

PG has never been a stranger to the All-Star Game and he’s always been seen as a regular of the Game. Every season, PG performs like a true All-Star and always backs up his performances by performing even better. But this season, voters felt he hasn’t performed good enough to be taken into the All-Star team. Consider the fact that he was traded to the Thunder and he would “share” the ball compared to how he “shared” the ball at Indiana (Pacers). But PG has worked his way to not only proving his worth in the OKC but by showing that no matter the team he’s in, PG is surely an All-Star. Yet, he didn’t tally enough votes. Even his teammate Russell Westbrook couldn’t believe it. But it is what it is and we may have to wait for 2019 to see PG’s return to the All-Star Game.
2. Devin Booker (Phoenix Suns)

usa_today_10553592.0.jpg

The eighth pick of 2015 NBA Draft has been living it big since his arrival in the NBA. Devin Booker has been terrorizing teams and getting buckets games after games. At some point he went on to score 70 points in a single game and that was only last year. This season he had a few 40 points games and the man is only 21 years old and he hasn’t reached his prime. Yet, voters didn’t think that he’s good enough to be in the All-Star team. This may be perhaps one of the greatest snubs in NBA history because Devin Booker has been slaying his performances this season and he’s performed better than some of the players already in the All-Star team (won’t mention any). And who’s to say if Devin could have a breakout performance after the All-Star Weekend, the same way Damian Lillard did when he was snubbed the past two years. We should be excited to see a whole new and better Devin Booker pretty soon.
3. Andre Drummond (Detroit Pistons)

andre-drummond1.jpg

The All-Star Game will be short of rebounds, short of tough big man action and short of big man dunks because we won’t be seeing any Andre Drummond (sad face). Drummond is a fantastic centre and a dominant one indeed as he is forever on the grind on both ends of the court. So why is it that he’s been snubbed this year? Much like PG and Devin, voters just didn’t see the need of a dominant force to be present in the All-Star Game. It’s understandable to ignore a team like Detroit Pistons but one cannot ignore the talent Drummond displays on the court. He’s already leading rebounds in the league and has a high rebounding rate per game and his stats should surely be a bolster to him joining the All-Star Game. And his stats have been consistent every season so there’s no clear relevant reason as to why Andre Drummond should be left out of the All-Star team.
There are more snubs this year and more evidence as to who should be in the All-Star team. If the NBA decided to increase the number of players in a team, we would be looking at less snubs but we have to accept what we have in the All-Star team. There will be snubs every year and the only way to deal with them is to just accept the vote tallies and to just look forward to what is to be a fantastic All-Star Game.

Embiid For The Stars

A while ago, Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers) tried his luck to woo singing superstar Rihanna off her feet. Unfortunately, she wasn’t impressed by The Process and said he should come back when he is an All Star. All jokes and laughs were on Embiid as he seemed to be aiming too high for the stars. But that all changed in the early hours of 19 January 2017 (Central African Time).

philadelphia-76ers-v-boston-celtics-c953ecbe2314fbbb.jpg

The announcement of the All-Star starters had left many shocked as the same man who got rejected by Rihanna would finally be an All Star…no that’s not enough. Joel Embiid is a starter! And to put the cherry on top of the cake, The Process is a first time All Star and the first 76ers All Star since 2012 (Last 76er All Star was Andre Iguodala). So, it must have been quite the celebration for The Process and the city of Philadelphia to finally have an All Star.
For Embiid to have been selected to be a starter is quite a big accomplishment for him considering he got more votes than Kristaps Porzingis, Al Horford and Kevin Love who have all been performing exceptionally. It’s not upsetting that The Process got more votes but it just shows that his performances has convinced many voters that he’s a better Frontcourt than the ones mentioned above and that it’s time to see The Process in an All-Star game.

Joel-Embiid-asked-Rihanna-out-on-a-date-back-in-2012-1200387.jpg
In all honesty, Joel Embiid does deserve to be starting for the All-Star Game considering that he is the main factor of the resurgence of the 76ers this season, we’ve never seen the 76ers look and play so good that we’ve all must have forgotten about their tanking of games just to get first round draft picks. But on the defense of the 76ers, their whole tanking is what resulted to it being called “The Process” and along the way they acquired Joel Embiid, The Process himself so the 76ers did themselves a favour in scoring a big man who can shoot at the three-point line, lockdown the paint and handle the ball almost like a guard. Sure, there are other Frontcourt players who play like Embiid but no other player has the charisma and charm of The Process.
It’s only right to congratulate Joel Embiid on being a first time All Star and a starter for the new format All Star Game and that he MIGHT stand a chance at wooing Rihanna. Yet it’s also important to wonder which team will The Process play for? Team LeBron or Team Steph? So it’s only right to make a prediction…
JOEL EMBIID WILL PLAY FOR

NBA All Star 2018: Starters & Captains Selection

In the early hours of 19 January 2018 Central African Time, the NBA had finally made their announcement of who the NBA All Star Starters are and who the Team Captains are. Bear in mind, due to the awful performance from last year’s All-Star Game, the NBA have changed the format of the All-Star Game to a more streetball like format where the Captains select the members of their team. In this matter, the Captains get to choose who will play in their respective teams from the list of the players who are voted to be All Stars. The Captains will start by selecting from The Starters and onwards to the bench players.

642999630-832x447.jpg
So, who are this year’s All Stars that will (HOPEFULLY) set the court alight with their All-Star performances…
WEST
Stephen Curry (Golden State Warriors)
James Harden (Houston Rockets)
Kevin Durant (Golden State Warriors)
Anthony Davis (New Orleans Pelicans)
DeMarcus Cousins (New Orleans Pelicans)
EAST
Kyrie Irving (Boston Celtics)
DeMar DeRozan (Toronto Raptors)
LeBron James (Cleveland Cavaliers)
Giannis Antetokounmpo (Milwaukee Bucks)
Joel Embiid (Philadelphia 76ers)
We’ve seen nine of these players in recent All-Star games but one player who is set to debut as a first time All Star is the highly calibre player from Philly, Joel Embiid but that will be a topic for another day.
Back to the All-Star Game selection, the Team Captains of the All-Star Game are…
Drum roll please
FROM THE WEST

STEPHEN CURRY

FROM THE EAST

LEBRON JAMES

So yes, we won’t be seeing an East vs West team format. This year it’s all about Team Steph vs Team LeBron and we are highly anticipating the picks from the respective captains. Could it be possible that LeBron picks KD or Steph picks Anthony Davis? We don’t know at the moment but this surely will be an exciting All-Star Game that we all will have to watch.
